Cloud computing comes in many different forms, from cloud-based MRP to client billing software, and adoption comes in as many models as well. Some companies embrace the form wholeheartedly while other operations only move piece by piece into the cloud. Now, some recent research into adoption predicts that cloud computing’s growth in coming years will be massive, thanks to tactical adoption.
A coming boom
Even as the cloud has grown so rapidly in recent years, there remains room for continued expansion, according to Gartner. It is growing at a faster rate than the overall IT market, but still remains only a small portion of overall spending. That should be changing in coming years as the majority of organizations plan to continue increasing their investments, according to Gregor Petri, research director at Gartner.
“Cloud computing is set to have a considerable impact on business in the future which is reflected in the survey finding that around 60 percent of organizations plan increased investment over the next two years to five years, while only 6 percent plan to decrease investments in cloud services,” Petri said.
That 6 percent is certainly the exception to the rule. In total, 80 percent of the businesses surveyed will be using the cloud in the next 12 months – and that includes 55 percent of those who have no presence in the cloud at the moment.
A changing model
Many of the aspects of the coming adoption will be tactical, Gartner found. Many companies have adopted the cloud in small or moderate areas, hesitant to make the full leap into a larger-scale operation. The impact, though, will be larger on the upper end of the chain as more and more companies make that move, according to Petri.
“The impact becomes even larger once companies start to explore the new possibilities cloud services offer to reimagine the way they service their customers,” said Petri. “This reimagining can entail replacing traditional offerings with completely digital services and products.”
