New government contract shows strength of cloud

The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), which has been working recently to become the premiere provider and broker of government cloud services, has issued a search for bids on a new contract. With the DISA working with both classified and unclassified information, it is a significant step for the government further into the cloud. In looking for a Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS) provider, the agency’s demands include databases, virtual machines, cloud storage and web hosting. Because of the array of services, the CIA says there may be multiple contracts awarded, set to last through 2017.

Previous battles
This contract was awarded after a long-running battle over a previous CIA contract among several cloud companies. The battle for the prior contract received a great deal of coverage, and the CIA’s hesitancy to name a final winner in the competition is a sign of the serious commitment moving to the cloud requires.
