If you work in business or technology, there is no doubt you hear a great deal of hype about the cloud. From conferences to news articles, there is a great deal of talk surrounding the technology – much of it justified, of course. Yet very often, it is based on individual stories of the technology taking a company to the next level, or options such as time tracking software or cloud CRM making processes far easier. Sometimes, it glimpses into the future potential of the technology, but many may hope for more concrete data that offers a picture of the current state of the cloud.
A widespread adoption
Recently, IBM has offered just that concrete information, and it shows that a huge amount of companies are using the cloud for a variety of reasons. According to Forbes, end-user spending on cloud services could be in excess of $180 billion by 2015, and the reasons are many.
More than half of the businesses surveyed by IBM use the cloud for analytical reasons, gleaning huge amounts of insights for personalization from the big data department. More than half are using it for collaboration and integration – just under 60 percent said it facilitated communication between departments and operations.
Many different reasons
These are just two of the many, many reasons companies look to the cloud, but there are some other benefits behind them. One in four companies surveyed said they saw drops in IT costs, and well over half said there was an increase in the efficiency of the operation after taking to the cloud. Not only that, employee satisfaction increased in the wake of adoption, as more were able to increase mobility and remote working, the source noted. Just slightly under half were able to increase their offerings in this regard, which can be a vital part of both retention and recruitment efforts for a company.
